Lady MacDonald moved to stand before them and bowed low. “Your Royal Majesties, the people of Terra, and the sacred trees of our Homeworld acknowledge and accept the Consort. With your permission, we will move onto the third challenge of the Investiture.”

“Let us continue.” Alex turned to sit back on her throne, while Lauren stepped down to sit at the Fraser stone.

“In the third challenge, Her Majesty Lauren Beckwith must prove her knowledge and understanding of our culture and heritage. In so doing, she will be accepted as a citizen of Terra and a member of her adopted Clan Fraser. She will walk among us as one of us. Who will be the tester in this?” Lady MacDonald asked the clan chiefs seated around the circle.

“As her adopted mother and sole member of Clan Fraser, I will do the asking.” Merilyn rose from her seat before the Doouglas stone.

A shiver ran down Lauren’s spine as she watched the diminutive Seneschal move to stand before the altar. I’ve never felt this much love for my birth mother. How could this woman come to mean so much to me? And in so short a time.

“Because of who you are to her. It is a relationship of mutual love and respect that you share,” Ice explained. Lauren reached out and laid a gentle hand on each of the wolves. “When did you get so smart?”

“I have always been smart, although not as intelligent as Snow.” Lauren felt the other wolf start at Ice’s compliment. “But I see feelings very well.”

Snow growled in agreement and a wolfy grin graced her face.

“Focus, Lauren. If I know Merilyn, this will not be easy.” Alex’s admonishment was the first time they shared conversation across their bond today.

Lauren didn't have time to answer Alex before Merilyn spoke. “Your Royal Majesty, will you please describe the Age of Tribulation and list its underlying causes.”

Clearing her throat, Lauren rose and walked to the center of the circle. She bowed to Merilyn. “There have been four Ages of Tribulation in the enduring and rich history of the Terrans. Would you please tell me which age you are asking about?”

A small smile crossed Merilyn’s face, and she inclined her head in acknowledgement of Lauren’s question. “I am asking of the second age.”

“The second Age of Tribulation was a time of great strife within the history of the Terrans. Terra Prime was divided into any number of fiefdoms, each ruled by a chief who held the position through blackmail, treachery, and even murder. Only those supported by the black priests were able to hold their positions for any length of time. If I were to compare it to the history of my reality, I would call it the Dark Age of Terra.

"All learning and growth were suppressed by a religious order based in superstition. Alchemy was the leading science of the time. The bulk of the Terran population was illiterate and lived in poverty, caught between warring liege lords.”

Merilyn slowly nodded in sad agreement.
